Spinifex wines are a wicked husband and wife team (Peter Schell & Magali Gely) who have extensive winemaking experience in Southern France, which has proved the inspiration for their unique range wines made in the Barossa. Their wines bring a new sensibility to the region, with lower alcohols, concentrated flavour profiles, elegant and not at all overbearing and tied together seamlessly with wonderful balance. It's fair to say that there are very few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex do.

In the extreme north west corner of the Barossa Valley is a small, old vineyard planting of Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro which was planted sometime in the 1940’s or 50’s, and its this block that this Grenache (and the Shiraz bottling) come from. Peter has been using Grenache from this vineyard since 2005, but this pure expression of Grenache has only been made since 2018. Hand harvested and fermented with 40% whole bunches in stainless steel open top fermenters. Fermented with indigenous yeasts, the must was gently pumping over during the early phase of fermentation with pigeage and treading prior to pressing into large format old French oak barrels.

Tasting Note:
The 2020 is seductive and perfumed, with notes of crushed strawberries, raspberries, red cherries and red plums tied in with ground pepper, foresty undertones and a little fresh earthiness. The palate is super crunchy and concentrated with real density and smooth ripe tannins.  Wonderful finesse from Barossa which is rarely seen and most importantly it has severe drinkability!
