The Boulay family have nine hectares in the village of Chavignol, and can trace their history as grape growers in the village back to 1380. Their vineyards are planted in Kimmeridgian-centric soils, which include the famed “crus” of Monts Damnés, La Grande Côte, and Clos de Beaujeu.

They have been farming organically since 1990 and harvest everything by hand. Their top wines, aged in a mix of tank and neutral 300L barrels, can age easily for over 20 years. Along with his neighbours such as François Cotat, Gérard makes wines that leave the grape variety far behind, with no trace of herbaceous one-dimensionality. Instead, his wines are arrestingly beautiful expressions of the unique terroirs of the region, displaying beguiling floral characters and a chalky, limestone freshness that truly speaks of their place of origin. The wines are thrilling, delicate and captivating in their youth, and profoundly soulful with age.

This is Sancerre to be measured against the finest whites of France—and when compared to the same quality from Chablis and the Côte de Beaune, you'll see them for the serious bargains they are.

Tasting Note:
First made as a single parcel in 2010, La Côte comes from the majestic La Grande Côte vineyard, a south to south-east facing hillside on the outskirts of Chavignol. It's the Domaine's coolest terroir and the last to be picked. The site's pure Kimmeridgian limestone and late picking date deliver both density and absurd precision on the palate. The terroir here, and the relatively tender age of the vines, deliver a more expressive style, yet one still bristling with tension and mineral notes that fall somewhere between struck flint and iodine. Vinified and aged in three and four-year-old barrels, it's fleshy and full, yet pulled taut by its fine acidity. There's plenty of nectarine and ripe apple goodness, and the kind of purity, texture and length and the finish is racy, yet with the faintest kiss of honey that will undoubtedly become more pronounced with age.
