2021 Spinifex Clairette
2021 Spinifex Clairette
Spinifex wines are a husband and wife team (Peter Schell & Magali Gely) who have extensive winemaking experience in Southern France, which has proved the inspiration for their unique range wines made in the Barossa. Their wines bring a new sensibility to the region, with lower alcohols, concentrated flavour profiles, elegant and not at all overbearing and tied together seamlessly with wonderful balance. It's fair to say that there are very few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex do.
Pete has a long history of using Clairette as a blending component in his wines and this offering is only one of a handful of 100% Clairettes within Australia. It's a fascinating Mediterranean variety that naturally holds its acidity well, bringing freshness and depth to the whites of the Southern Rhône. Definitely one to try for lovers of textural whites with a point of difference, and of course, not breaking the bank.
The fruit for this is sourced from a single, elevated site in Rowland Flat on the eastern side of the Barossa Valley. The grapes were hand-harvested, chilled overnight and crushed, before maceration for around 4-8 hours. The settled juice was wild yeast fermented predominantly in stainless steel but with a small proportion of old French oak used.
Tasting Note:
Pete's mastery is on clear display yet again, striking a harmonious balance between impressive weight, silky texture and fresh acidity. This is a zingy, zesty style of wine with loads of citrus and almond character. The small maceration time has given an assertive phenolic grip (which is not unpleasant), and beautifully counterbalanced by crisp flavours of lemon zest and grapefruit, and a vibrant fresh finish.
2021 Disznóko Dry Furmint
2021 Disznóko Dry Furmint
After decades on the side lines, it's finally game on for
Hungary's dry whites.
Disznoko is the biggest domain in Tokaj (and most respected), with vineyards spanning over 100ha's in north-west Hungary, on the Slovakian border. It was purchased by Axa Millésimes in 1993 and they completely restored it to its former glory. A brand new winery was built in 1995, completely decked out with the latest and greatest technological innovations, and equipment. Disznoko grow six white grape varieties in Tokaj: Fürmint, Zeta, Harslevelu, Muscat Jaune, Köverszölö and Kabar. This relatively new style is a welcome addition to the Disznóko family highlighting the versatility, individuality and sheer quality of Tokaj's signature grape variety.
Fruit is drawn from several plots of the Disznóko vineyard (on volcanic/clay soils), specifically destined for their dry Furmint. It was hand-harvested with special care to remove any botrytised berries, and the wine was vinified in tank only.
Tasting Note:
In Disznókő’s customary style, this is all about purity and zesty freshness, with the aim to capture the vibrant juiciness and minerality natural to this unique grape variety. With nectarine, grapefruit pith and ripe apple-skin aromas and flavours combined with that trademark zesty, racy dryness, there’s something akin to a vibrant Chablis going on here, especially in its flinty, salt-licked close. Serve as an aperitif, with seafood (it’s superb with oysters) or poultry/game bird dishes. This is a rare find indeed.

2019 Domaine de la Combe Muscadet Reserve Personelle
2019 Domaine de la Combe Muscadet Reserve Personelle
Pierre-Henri Gadais of Domaine de la Combe was lucky enough to be born into a Loire Valley winemaking family so its fair to say, wine is in his blood. Following his viticulture and oenology studies, Pierre-Henri complemented his qualifications by undertaking several winemaking stints through various vineyards of France such as Burgundy, Bordeaux and Sancerre, as well as a experience in Switzerland and Australia. He finally landed back at the family estate in 2016 where he took over the Domaine and began making wines under the Domaine de la Combe label.
Now he is focused on quality and enhancing the regional terroir, whilst working towards organic certification in late 2021. Saint-Fiacre is the only village embedded between the two rivers of Nantes, the Sèvre and the Maine, and the Domaine vineyards are virtually surrounded by the Sèvre River in a unique microclimate - steep, rocky slopes conducive to the cultivation of Muscadet (Melon B).
Tasting Note:
This wine is wild-fermented in stainless steel, with classic ageing on lees “sur lie” plus stirring for 14 months and 12 months more before release. This is a classic full bodied and concentrated style of Muscadet with trademark crisp, flinty notes and hints of lemon blossom, and oyster shell with fresh, zesty and savoury tones on the palate and hints of lemon pith and green apple along with the notable sur lie yeasty lees notes. The finish on this is wonderfully refreshing to make this an affordable, low-intervention wine in one of its finest, most refreshing forms!
2021 Gorrondona Txakoli
2021 Gorrondona Txakoli
Doniene Gorrondona are part of a small group of young Basque wineries who are elevating the classic, lean and dry styles of Txakoli traditionally poured from a great height in the tiny bars in San Sebastian, into, thankfully, a more serious style of wine. They've crafted a brilliant style here concentrating on organic farming techniques (almost unheard of in the region) and are careful with clonal and site selection, using slopes to aid in drainage, aspects facing the Cantabrian coastline, Pergola trained vines to aid in airflow and completely forgoing commercial yeasts. The result is seriously good, and seriously drinkable wine...
This Txakoli is made from the traditional Basque varietals of Hondurabi Zuri (85%) with little bits of Iskirita Zuri Hadia (11%) and a handful of friends. It’s handpicked and fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, kept on lees for six months before being lightly filtered, and bottled.
Tasting Note:
This is something out of the ordinary. Its wonderfully saline and mineral, a perfect match for the food of the region. On the nose there is plenty of cut grass, pine leaves, fresh lime leaf, nashi pear and white floral aromatics. The palate is clean, lean and tight, driven by a refreshing hit of citric acid with notes of bread and everything wonderful from the nose. This is a wine you need to try if you love Riesling, or high acid whites!
2021 Castello di Tassarolo Marchesi Gavi ‘Spinola’
2021 Castello di Tassarolo Marchesi Gavi ‘Spinola’
Castello di Tassarolo has been in the Spinola family since the 14th century. In a report commissioned by the Emperor in 1656 it was stated that “There is good wine...” at Castello di Tassarolo.
Current owner Massimiliana Spinola gave up an art career in London in 2005 to return to Tassarolo when her father became ill. It was a moment of crisis that made her reflect upon her own life and career, and also on the management of the property and its wine production. Breaking with conventional farming, Massimiliana began the transition to biodynamics in 2006. The idea was to develop the vitality of the soils, to nurture the humus and the various ecosystems and to bring them back to life. Masimiliana Spinola and her husband Henri Finzi-Constantine now run their certified organic winery using biodynamic agriculture.
Gavi is noted for revealing its 'terrior' and is traditionally a bone-dry wine with characters of flint and fresh dry acidity, coming from the mineral-rich soils. In the last few years, wine makers have started to produce more structured and complex wines with very good results, proving that the Cortese grape grown in the Gavi area is suitable for aging in bottle or barrels and produce long lasting wines.
Tasting Note:
This wine is made from 100% Cortese. It is wonderfully aromatic with notes of white blossoms, green apple and citrus lemon. It's completely bone dry and light in body with crisp citrus and pear on the palate with an incredible mineral component to make this wine fresh and persistent on the finish. You can really taste the Alps here.
