2019 La Casilla Bobal

La Casilla Bobal

2019 La Casilla Bobal

Juan Antonio Ponce worked and learned next to the famous Telmo Rodriguez. At the age of 23 he left and decided to make his own winery in the newer Manchuela DO zone and with a focus on the local grape variety Bobal.
If you've never heard of it, Bobal is a red Spanish variety with lots of bright cherry fruit, fine tannins, juicy acidity, and chocolatey aftertaste. While its plantings are not that common, it's usually found in many blends and it's only in recent years that we've begun to see it out on its own as single varietal. We have Ponce to thank, with his impressive range of varietally driven Bobal wines making La Casilla one of the wines you need to try!

La Casilla comes from organically grown vines, aged 35-70 years old. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts, in whole bunches, in oak tanks of 4,500 litres. It is then transferred to 600-liter oak barrels where it ages for 10 months. The wine is bottled unfiltered and without any other intervention.

Tasting Note:
It has dark savoury fruit with notes of bay, thyme and leather. Firmer structured and chalky on the palate. In typical Bodegas Ponce fashion, La Casilla manages to express the inherent power and structure of Bobal and it's native Manchuela, but goes so with the sort of grace and style that re-calls Cru Beaujolais.

2022 Sons of Sugarland Barbera

2022 Sons of Sugarland Barbera

Sons of Sugarland is a partnership project between Fritz Schooon, Henk Kotze and acclaimed winemaker Reenen Borman. Reenen is known for his exceptional Syrahs under the Sons of Sugarland label and family farm Boschkloof. This Barbera is a new addition to the range and has already created quite the following, “because, every wine Reenen makes must be good”, says Corlien. That’s the epitome of a great winemaker, when people trust that every wine you put in a bottle can be bought blindly and will reward generously.

Barbera is rarely found in South Africa, with just 50ha in total so to see a winemaker like Reenen working with this variety now is truly exciting. The variety typically produces wines with good colour and depth, but low tannins and high acidity. That sounds just about perfect for a South African summer red. The trick is in harvesting early enough to not have jammy fruit, but also not too early with too much acidity.

Reenen uses grapes from Breedekloof with the intention to show the true characteristics of the variety and not altering it through winemaking processes. Grapes were fermented as whole bunches in open top fermenters and thereafter aged in 400lt old barrels for about 11 months. It resulted in a really soft tannin structure and also allowed the fresh fruit flavours to stay intact. Serve it slightly chilled to really enjoy all the crisp and juicy berry flavours.

2019 Palacios Remondo Rioja Oriental La Montesa

2019 Palacios Remondo Rioja Oriental La Montesa

2019 Palacios Remondo Rioja Oriental La Montesa

Alvaro Palacios is one of Spain's greatest winemakers, (Decanter Man of the Year 2015), who’s best-known for putting Priorat on the map. He studied winemaking in Bordeaux, including a stint at Château Pétrus. However, his family are from Rioja, so in 1999 Álvaro returned to the family estate, with the goal of creating benchmark Rioja. His organically farmed vineyards grow on the high-altitude slopes of Rioja Oriental, the most easterly and warmest part of Rioja. While most of Rioja relies on Tempranillo, Alvaro believes in Garnacha as the foundation of his wine, where the grape suits the alluvial soils and Mediterranean climate. Some Tempranillo is planted, but he is phasing it out. His winemaking relies on natural practices and his vineyards are certified organic, and unfined or unfiltered.

2021 Arnaud Lambert Saumur Breze Rouge Clos Mazurique

2021 Arnaud Lambert Saumur Breze Rouge Clos Mazurique

Arnaud Lambert has to be one of the most talented winemakers in the Loire Valley regularly producing some of the most interesting wines in and around Saumur and Saumur Champigny. He is helping to discover the expression and diversity of soils and individual sites within the Saumur appellations, with the end goal to give expression to each individual terroir and fully realise each vineyard sites potential. This is achieved through organic viticulture and minimal intervention wine-making. By practicing these biodynamics and bringing a Burgundian approach to his winemaking, his Cabernet Francs are juicy, perfumed, fresh and make for fantastic drinking over the warmer months with a little chill.

Tasting Notes:
This is classic Cabernet Franc! The nose shows aromas violets, red currants and red raspberry blossom with hints of green bell pepper and herbal characters. The palate is silky smooth with vibrant acidity and bright red fruits mixed with savoury, earthy and herbal undertones.
Made with a very Burgundian approach this is deliciously juicy and fun, and completely engaging. It's serious, but not in an expensive way, this is easy drinking and for the money and over delivers in every aspect.

2021 Craggy Range Martinborough Pinot Noir

Craggy Range is a family owned winery established in 1997, and situated in the shadow of the spectacular Te Mata Peak in the premium wine growing area of Hawke’s Bay New Zealand. They produce iconic wines from grapes grown on exceptional sites in Hawke’s Bay, Martinborough, and Marlborough, always with a focus on quality. From the stony, warm soils of the Gimblett Gravels in Hawke's Bay to the volcanic, clay soils of Te Muna Road in Martinborough, these exceptional vineyards produce wines with amazing aromatics, purity and complexity.

The reputation of Craggy Range’s portfolio is synonymous with quality and attention to detail, with the winery receiving a number of internationally recognised awards. Bob Campbell MW named Craggy Range his New Zealand Winery of the Year 2017, and the winery is the only New Zealand producer to feature in the US Wine & Spirits magazine top 100 wineries. Craggy Range Aroha and Le Sol also feature in the New Zealand Fine Wine Classification.

Tasting Note:
Straight away the bright cherry with purple hue leaps from the glass. Scents of wild strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, soft savoury spice and white truffle notes are all in abundance on the nose.
The palate has so much excitement with acidity so remarkably fresh yet not overwhelming and doesn’t detract from the silky soft tannins and velvety mouthfeel.
A surprising wine with a very long road ahead, if you can wait. If not, have it with your duck...

2020 La Tunella Pinot Nero

2020 La Tunella Pinot Nero

La Tunella is based in the Colli Orientali del Friuli and has come a long way since farmer Min Zorzettig founded the estate between the first and second world wars. After a large re-vamp in the early nineties, old vineyards were replanted, new land acquired, new varieties introduced and production was intentionally cut, with harvest now taking place almost entirely by hand. Grown on high sun-trap terraces in the eastern Friuli hills, the hand-tended vines produce only the tiniest quantity of grapes. The soils here are unique to the area combining a mix of marl and sandstone called Ponca, and are believed to be the key to the expressive yet delicate flavours and textural purity of La Tunella’s wines.

The winery now boasts an impressive range of delicious wines from international grapes such as Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio as well as rare, indigenous varieties like the spicy Friulano. Today, third generation grandsons Massimo and Marco run the winery, producing exceptional wines, each showing the stunning, characteristic viscosity and purity of fruit for which the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region is famous.

Tasting note:
La Tunella Pinot Nero has a beautiful light ruby red colour. Grown in the cooler hills of Friuli, the grapes are all hand harvested in the first week of September as per their norm.
This wine has bright violet, bitter almond, raspberry and cherry notes with hints wild herbs and a inviting warm spices on the nose. On the palate it's pleasant, dry and slightly aromatic with a savoury, fresh and juicy character with notes of red fruit such as crushed cherry, strawberry, plums, raspberry and soft velvety tannins to finish.
