2020 BlankBottle Confessions Of A White Glove Chaser

2020 BlankBottle Confessions Of A White Glove Chaser

2020 BlankBottle Confessions Of A White Glove Chaser

I am so delighted to be able to introduce to you the Blankbottle range from the amazing and very thoughtful winemaker Pieter Walser, from South Africa.

The wines of BlankBottle are not bound to a specific wine area or wine style. Generally they're from many different vineyards, scattered across the Western Cape, different regions, micro-climates, soil types, and ultimately leads to a vast array of different wine styles. One look at his website and you will understand! These wines are driven by quality, adventure, excitement and mystery, and at the centre of it all, are the guys in the vineyards, viticulturists, winemakers, family, friends and of course, BlankBottle fans.

Confessions of a White Glove Chaser is a great blend of Cabernet franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot all from the Helderberg in Stellenbosch. It's a story of very creative and budget-friendly wine-making that goes back to 2013 when Pieter Walser was a little strapped for cash and driving around the Cape looking for grapes, and ultimately finding the now infamous white gloved pickers. Check out his website for the story, its hugely compelling.

Tasting Note:
It's a remarkable Bordeaux blend with lots of brambly fruit, super-fine tannins, and a long and precise finish. It's graceful yet with terrific concentration, velvety with a savoury, earthy touch making it very complex.

This certainly punches above it's weight and represents a lovely Bordeaux blend from the Cape. Pieter’s Bordeaux blends get better and better although perhaps its the white gloves that are getting better, and Pieter's ability to chase them around the cape is becoming more efficient..? Either way, drink it with friends worthy of the story!

2017 Meerlust Rubicon

2017 Meerlust Rubicon

Meerlust Estate has been part of the Myburgh family tradition for eight generations, dating back to 1693. Meerlust, with its historic maor house, classic wine cellar, family cemetery, dovecote and bird sanctuary is situated fifteen kilometres south of Stellenbosch, with False Bay only a mere five kilometres away. Wines are only made from grapes grown on the Estate which is uniquely positioned to produce wines with exceptional complexity and character.

In the summertime, ocean breezes and evening mists roll in from the coast to cool the vineyards. The grapes ripen slowly, thus achieving full, concentrated varietal flavours. The soils consist of predominantly deep, well drained Hutton and Clovelly soil types, affording the vines excellent drought resistance and an ideal substrata for producing concentrated, complex wines Meerlust produces wines that are true to the intrinsic character of their vineyards located in the Stellenbosch region. The diverse soils, the unique coastal climate and over 300 years of dedication are all essential components of Meerlust’s complex, rich, and truly distinctive wines.

Tasting Note:
The 2017 Rubicon is a classic vintage of this iconic Cape wine. Very deep, youthful colour, and intense almost purple hue. Quintessential Rubicon nose with violets, ripe plum, cedar wood, fennel and intense spiciness. A typical liquorice note also evident on the nose. Still young and intense, promising further maturation potential. The palate is full bodied, structured but packed with fresh dark fruit and rounded, linear tannins promising long beneficial maturation. A stand out vintage of Rubicon displaying all the charm of a perfect vintage from mature vines.

2021 Patatsfontein Patatsblanc

2021 Patatsfontein Patatsblanc

2021 Patatsfontein Patatsblanc

Patatsfontein is a South African winemaking partnership between Reneen Borman of Boschkloof and college friends Henke Kotze and Fritz Schoon. The story goes that Schoon’s father-in-law traded his flooring business to purchase a 1,200-hectare property in Montagu, which was planted to various white grapes including Colombard and Chenin Blanc (known colloquially as Steen). Schoon’s friend, Chris “Butch” Alheit visited the vineyard one day, and, inspired by what he saw, convinced Schoon that their fruit was too good to be sold off to the local co-op. Alheit introduced Schoon to Reneen Borman, and the Patatsfontein label was established.

Today, Patatsfontein is known for its Steen, Colombard, and Syrah wines, which have risen the ranks of the greats in South Africa in a very short time. Beyond skilled winemaking, the well-chosen vineyard sites are to thank for that praise. The white wines are grown at 2,000 feet in Montagu, a rugged and remote area known for its unique slate soils. These cool-climate whites are beautifully raw, with bracing acidity and finesse. Patatsfontein’s Syrah is grown in the Polkadraai Hills of Stellenbosch. This area gets long sunshine hours, balanced by cool ocean gusts, which renders a Syrah with concentration and explosivity.

Tasting Note:
A great wine that’s full of personality and the Montagu slate really shines through here in a wine that is fresh and mineral driven. The nose shows a floral top note before pear, peach, apple and citrus with a hint of reduction in the background while the palate has good weight and texture, the acidity is nicely coated and the finish gently savoury.

2021 Leeuwenkuil Chenin Blanc

2021 Leeuwenkuil Chenin Blanc

Willie and Emma Dreyer are the proud owners of Leeuwenkuil Family Vineyards aka “Lion’s Lair” named after the ferocious Cape Lion that roamed the region hunting unsuspecting cattle. Back in 1693 this vineyard was originally known as Schinderkuijl, which is a German name referring to the tradition of gathering materials from demolished buildings or shipwrecks to create something entirely new - wonderfully apt considering the processes carried out on the farm.

Willie and Emma met at the age of 16 and together they have built Leeuwenkuil into a successful winery. Hardworking and passionate, Willie has a particularly hands-on approach to wine farming and studiously tends to his land from dusk until dawn. He inherited half of the farm, which back then comprised of 45 hectares of vineyards but over the past 30 years, they have built Leeuwenkuil into what it is today – 1250 hectares of thriving vineyards producing a wide range of excellent wines. Emma grew up a mere two farms north of Leeuwenkuil and has a first-hand grasp of all facets of farming. She is the one who brings the Leeuwenkuil family together, always making sure everyone here is as happy as can be.

The Leeuwenkuil Family Vineyards is driven by two resilient forces – quality time and quality wine, meaning the range of wines offer excellent value for money. Natural fermentation and low sulphur levels are part of the winemaking philosophy and the same attention to detail apply for all their range of wines. Could you ask for a more perfect farming ethos?

Tasting Note:
This Chenin Blanc is sourced from dryland farmed vineyards in the prestigious Swartland region of the Western Cape. These conditions naturally limit the crop and produce ripe Chenin berries with fresh and clean acidity. The 2022 Chenin is more serious than previous vintages because a bigger portion of older bush vine vineyards were used.

This is a refined white with aromas of tropical fruit and green apple. Its crisp minerally style combined with time spent on lees leads to a fleshy lees and drying finish.

2022 Sons of Sugarland Barbera

2022 Sons of Sugarland Barbera

2022 Sons of Sugarland Barbera

Sons of Sugarland is a partnership project between Fritz Schooon, Henk Kotze and acclaimed winemaker Reenen Borman. Reenen is known for his exceptional Syrahs under the Sons of Sugarland label and family farm Boschkloof. This Barbera is a new addition to the range and has already created quite the following, “because, every wine Reenen makes must be good”, says Corlien. That’s the epitome of a great winemaker, when people trust that every wine you put in a bottle can be bought blindly and will reward generously.

Barbera is rarely found in South Africa, with just 50ha in total so to see a winemaker like Reenen working with this variety now is truly exciting. The variety typically produces wines with good colour and depth, but low tannins and high acidity. That sounds just about perfect for a South African summer red. The trick is in harvesting early enough to not have jammy fruit, but also not too early with too much acidity.

Reenen uses grapes from Breedekloof with the intention to show the true characteristics of the variety and not altering it through winemaking processes. Grapes were fermented as whole bunches in open top fermenters and thereafter aged in 400lt old barrels for about 11 months. It resulted in a really soft tannin structure and also allowed the fresh fruit flavours to stay intact. Serve it slightly chilled to really enjoy all the crisp and juicy berry flavours.

2020 Mullineux Old Vine White

2020 Mullineux Old Vine White

Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines is one of the stand-out producers in South Africa's budding Swartland region. Winemakers Chris and Andrea Mullineux's ambition is to bottle wines that are a true expression of the Swartland, and all steps of their winemaking process are taken with this in mind. They work closely with a select group of growers who follow sustainable, reasoned farming practices, as well as owning vineyards at their Roundstone Farm in Riebeeksrivier.

In the cellar, apart from minimal amounts of sulphur, nothing is added to or removed from the wine. They do not make use of any yeasts, acids, tannins, enzymes, or fining and filtering agents. Leeu (Afrikaans for lion) was added to the name recently to recognise the contribution of a new investor to the project.

Tasting Note:
Pale straw in colour, this wine has a nose of ripe, green citrus fruit and Christmas spices. The palate is fresh and richly textured, with notes of ripe pears, almonds and peaches, and a clove-like finish.
