Aligoté is the 'other' white grape of Burgundy and not nearly as famous as its sibling: Chardonnay. Although they do share parentage, Aligoté suffered from an image problem and was considered to be an inferior grape variety. Today you can find it scattered across Burgundy, and most notably in it's own appellation, Bouzeron. When planted in the right vineyard and made with great care, Aligoté can offer wines of depth, elegance and minerality that could seriously stand up to Chardonnay.

This tiny Domaine was established by Sylvain Cathiard’s grandfather (who worked for Domaine de la Romanee Conti and later Domaine Lamarche) in the 1930s and was then further built and maintained by Sylvain’s father Andre from 1969 until 1985, when Sylvain himself became involved. The following year, Sylvain set up his own with parcels of vines rented from his father and other vignerons, before taking on his father’s original vineyards. From 2006, he was joined by his son, Sebastian, and they have formed the estate of Sylvain Cathiard et Fils and since 2011 Sebastien is running the domaine with Sylvain retiring.

The wines of Domaine Cathiard have long been characterised by their fruit purity and textural depth. Sebastien Cathiard’s Aligoté embraces this style. The first two vintages were from a small (0.13 hectare) parcel of young vines, but the wine now benefits from a majority (1.45 hectares) of significantly older vines that bring a higher level concentration. Add to this the warm, dry conditions of the 2022 vintage and you have here an Aligoté of intensity and breadth of a character and quality consistent with everything that is produced at this understandably revered Vosne-Romanée address.
