Boekenhoutskloof was established in furthest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek valley in 1776. The farm’s name means “ravine of the Boekenhout” (pronounced Book-n-Howed) and the Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape Beech tree greatly prized for furniture making. Hence the chairs on the label. In 1993 the farm and homestead were bought and restored and a new vineyard planting programme was established that now includes Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon and Viognier.

Porseleinberg is home to a groundbreaking Cape Syrah that exemplifies the essence of terroir-driven, authentic wine. The extremely rugged and dry schistous mountain doesn’t invite easy viticulture, but of course extreme terroir produces extreme wine! One of the most distinct things about the Porseleinberg Syrah is its unusual label, which is created by hand on an old-school Original Heidelberg Platen Press Model T, the smallest motorised printer ever produced by this iconic company. Ripe but restrained, red fruit and spice leaning more to the cooler spectrum. Very mineral and cool on the palate with lots of fruit and a present tannin giving it the purity and fresh sense that is the trademark of the Porseleinberg soils.

Tasting Notes: (From the Critics)
The 2019 Porseleinberg has a brilliant nose, as I would expect, presenting an exquisitely defined mixture of red and black fruit with hints of honey and orange blossom, pressed iris petals and incense. The medium-bodied, harmonious palate offers fine-grained tannins and a judicious touch of white pepper and clove. Very Rhône-like in style, it reminds me of a Jamet Côte-Rôtie tasted the previous month. Absolute class from Callie Louw, and better than the 2018 in my opinion. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Neal Martin - Antonio Galloni's Vinous (July 2021)

Vibrant, peppery nose of blackcurrants, black pepper, five spice, grilled herbs, bay leaves and chili chocolate. It’s medium-to full-bodied with bright acidity and tight-grained tannins. Excellent flavor concentration here with a long, savory and juicy finish. 100% syrah. Sustainable. Drink now or hold.
